Trip Report: Lagoon Amusement Park, Opening Day, 5/23/2020

The long-awaited day has finally come.

The Theme Park Gods have bestowed upon us their sacred grace.

We bow before them in humility and gratitude on this blessed day.

For Lagoon Amusement Park, the happiest place in Utah, has finally opened for the 2020 season.

I found out on Friday night, and immediately shifted all my plans to spend a 3/4 day at Lagoon. I had too much going on for a full day, but wanted to ride as much as I could before dinner. I snagged a reservation for 11:00 AM, and headed out after my run the next morning.

I redeemed my parking pass and told the employees about my reservation. They let me in, and I went to go pick up my season pass. After some confusion as to which window to go to (hint: it’s the one that says “Will Call”), I picked it up and headed on inside.

A quick recap of their current rules: They are only operating at 15% capacity so you have to get a reservation for one of the timeslots, currently between like 10 AM and 7 PM if I remember correctly. Look on their Instagram or Facebook (sorry, just got cancer from mentioning that website) page for the link. You have to wear a mask to get into the park, but they don’t enforce mask wearing after you get through the gates, so you can just drop it like it’s hot. They take around 20 minutes to sanitize each ride periodically; I haven’t yet figured out how often they do this, but it’s better just to wait in line because they sanitize a bunch of rides at the same time. In Kiddieland there are directional arrows that nobody follows. There are no issues with locker rentals, for the first time ever I think, because there simply aren’t enough people in the park to take them all up. Plus, the employees sanitize the lockers after each use, so they also end the rentals if you don’t do it yourself. There are no single rider lines currently in operation. There are cute little 6 feet signs in the queues, which people are pretty good about following actually, and they sit you far apart from other people on rides and coasters (hence the severely reduced park capacity). There are no maps, either, because we all know that amusement park maps carry THE CORONA.

But seriously, I was super happy to follow their rules because they were pretty easy and they allowed the park to open during yellow phase. So it is very, very good that Lagoon is doing this!

Let’s get on with the first day of the 2020 operating season! Ah yes, 2020, which is quickly proving to be the lamest year in all of existence to be alive, but I digress!

Well we HAVE to ride Cannibal first. It is the Unspoken Law of Lagoon (ULOL): If you are not going to Lagoon-A-Beach first, then Cannibal must be the first thing that you ride.
I’ve had one desire since I was born: to see my body ripped and torn. To see my flesh devoured before my eyes. Only for you, I volunteer as a human sacrifice. (I like Bloodbath, sorry, and songs about cannibalism are positively perfect for my favorite roller coaster of all time, Cannibal.)

And thus, we kick off the theme park on-season as we always should: dangling 200 feet over the I-15, caught in the conglomeration of adrenaline and monotony, watching the cars go by. Maybe we crane our heads to the right to see if we can catch a good glimpse of the Primordial construction, ah…But alas, all too soon we are plummeting towards that sweet, sweet earth far below us.

It’s fun putting your hands up on that glorious, airtime-filled first drop that we here at A&A are so enamored with. But if you really want to freak people out, put your hands up when you start barrel rolling over the pool at the top of the falls. Some lady will probably start screaming about how she’s going to fall out. Meanwhile, you’re just chilling and counting the coins sitting in the water whilst upside down. Make a wish!

After that, it’s Wicked time. Here is a picture of what I think is its PLC system, but I’m not entirely sure. They wouldn’t let me ride it as a single rider, so an employee came to ride with me. Note to self: The front row on Wicked sucks. It’s super bumpy and it hurts. But the back row is pure bliss for some reason.
<3
And now it’s Colossus the Fire Dragon time! I love this coaster so much that I did it twice in a row!
We in the ‘hood still. Okay, not really. I just have that song stuck in my head. This coaster is pretty bumpy but sitting directly in the middle helps mitigate that. And it’s much better in terms of smoothness than your average woodie.
Mr. Peacock wants a beer, waiter! GET OVER HERE
Are you nerds ready for Air Race? I got a whole plane to myself because I could technically have The Rona (TM) so that was pretty nice. I love the barrel rolls!
Hi kangaroos! You are so cute!
“‘hood took me under so I follow the rules…”
– these deer, probably

After that it was time for some Teriyaki Stix. Got the teriyaki chicken bowl with white rice as per usual, and ate it on the benches. Good, but salty.

Ah yes, it’s time for the Wild Kingdom Express! I love the Lagoon Railroad. Always gotta do it after lunch.
View of the swing rides over the lake, from the railroad. My favorite waveswinger of all time. <3
It sure doesn’t feel like we’re in an amusement park right now. And I love that.
Another shot of the dragon swing and waveswinger.
Tigey-wigey
I love him.
Buffalo buffalo Buffalo buffalo buffalo buffalo Buffalo buffalo. Oh wait, that’s a camel. This part smells really bad.
FLY AWAY, ANIMALS! BE FREE!
The swing ride again. Did I mention how much I love this? Well I’m going to say it again.
It’s time for…Terroride.
This ogre is somehow fat and shredded at the same time.
Shredded, just like my dreams.
A cool look at the hallway. It’s wonderfully themed, and certainly a step up from the carnival zombie type attractions.
Bombora. The surf rock music was ON!
And here I wait for the excellent Bat, which you should not ride with sunglasses on because it will bang them against the side of your head. Unfortunately, I did exactly that.
Can you see Primordial through those cars? I am so excited!
The Paratrooper, one of my favorite flats at Lagoon.
I love the water features
I have no idea what this fire truck crazy bus thing is called. I think the title is on the sign but I can’t really tell. Anyway, it’s cutely themed and tons of fun. Lagoon’s new ride for 2020 🙂 Now we just need to wait for Primordial in 2021 or 2022!
Suck it, doomers and Karens who want me to stay cooped up inside for the rest of my life. Nope, I’m here and I’m riding the Bat! Eat your heart out.
*the octopus raps “First Day Out”*
The webs from all the spiders, catching things and eating their insides. Ah yes, Spider is quite nice.
More Spider. I’m quite proud of this picture.
Architecture of Spider
Even more Spider!
Hey, they were sanitizing the cars while I was waiting in line. I had a lot of time on my hands.
Love this fountain. Sadly, the chairlift lies empty and forlorn…probably because it would be really hard to sanitize since it’s continuous-loading.
Shortest line ever for Rocket: Blast-Off. Wish I had time to do Re-Entry as well, but I wanted to meet my friends for dinner.
Samurai was closed every time I went by it…as usual.
One of my favorite flats at Lagoon.
And thus we return back to our beloved Cannibal before heading home for the evening.
No single riders allowed on the Ferris wheel, period. Did you know you can spin those carts just like Mad Tea Party at Disneyland? Yup, it’s terrifying.
I love this painting. In this world we will all hurt people and get hurt ourselves no matter what we do. The key is to not try to escape that, like these skulls are doing, but rather overcome it. Or something. I’m trying to be philosophical, but it’s really late, I should’ve been in bed two hours ago, I want ice cream, and I kind of have to go to the bathroom.
Cannibal’s exit. After this, I went ahead and grabbed myself a Lagoon fanny pack, which should make it easier for me to take my phone on rides. I had a nice chat with the sweet cashier lady as well!
Oh but first we’ve got to admire the fountain before leaving.
And I can’t leave without a chocolate hazelnut Beaver Tail!
I don’t know why I took a picture of this, but it’s kinda cool I guess?
I sometimes get sodas from this stand, but I didn’t really need the sugar boost this time after my Beaver Tail.
One last look at the excellent Roller Coaster before heading back home to hang out with friends…
And that’s all folks! I’ve got my season pass and season parking for 2020. It’s going to be great.

Ultimately, ’twas an excellent opening day. I sort of wish I had stayed there until closing. But I have the whole season in front of me. I’m in no rush at all. I had a fun day, I’m the happiest I’ve been in months, and I can tell that this season is going to be awesome!
